[SeaRaptor] World of Warships – First Look: Tier IX Russian Battleship Sovetsky Soyuz

Here’s our First Look at Tier IX Russian Battleship Sovetsky Soyuz.

DISCLAIMER: I forgot the “Work in Progress” logo on the video. Apologies. Please remember that all stats and such on the public test server are a work in progress and subject to change.

+ Excellent health pool of 88,100 hit points trails only Musashi for the title of best-in-tier. Belt armor remains at 375mm, though there are plates near the bow that go as high as 420mm. She retains the 32mm bow armor of Vladivostok, as well as the odd 220mm section of waterline armor forward of Turret No. 1.

+ Same basic guns as Vladivostok, but Sovetsky Soyuz’s barrels move up to 50 calibers in length with a corresponding uptick in muzzle velocity on her shells. The American Tier IX super heavy shells of Iowa and Missouri still out-damage her on a shell-for-shell basis, but it’s a very minor gap of only 250 points. As with all Russian battleships, she has a 1.7 sigma paired with a fairly average dispersion value for the tier.

+ Fairly anemic secondary battery of six double-barrel 130mm turrets with a range of 5.0 km. Sovestky is not a ship you’ll want to try a secondary build with.

+ AA is hard to gauge right now, as the 0.8.1 PTS is using the pre- hotfix AA values. If I’m extrapolating this correctly, Sovetsky Soyuz’s long-range aura will be near the bottom of the tier, and her mid-range aura is not much better, probably on par with Friedrich der Große. Like her immediate predecessor, she will fear incoming aircraft.

+ Her top speed of 28 knots is a liability. In a tier where most other battleships break 30 knots easily, Soyuz will find herself sucking wind. Ironically, her 950 meter turning circle is merely average, while her rudder response time is a best-in-tier 14.9 seconds.

+ Sovetsky Soyuz has a fairly average surface detection radius, but a worst-in-tier aerial detection one. Married with her so-so AA suite and her slow-ish top speed, enemy planes are going to be a big problem.

+ Same spread of consumables as Vladivostok: damage control, repair party, and a choice between Catapult Fighter or the funky BB/CV radar.

I hesitate to call her a dud without playing her, but Sovestky Soyuz doesn’t have a lot going for her. She has a lot of health and her guns look solid, but lots of other Tier IX battleships have 16” guns. Her secondaries and AA are weak, she’s slow, and she’s spotted from the moon by planes and surface ships alike. She’ll probably have to equip Catapult Fighter instead of her weird BB/CV spotting radar in order to have some survivability against enemy carrier strikes. Overall, she looks pretty meh on paper.
